Elinor Is Realistic And Practical While Marianne - 890 Words
Both Elinor and Marianne possess agreeable qualities: Elinor is realistic and practical while Marianne is passionate. However, these good qualities do nothing in their search for husbands since the world in which they live is largely defined by money and social connections, which the two lack. For instance, to demonstrate the importance of social rank, Austen writes: He is very far from being independent. What his mother really is we cannot know; but, from Fannyââ¬â¢s occasional mention of her conduct and opinions, we have never been disposed to think her amiable; and I am very much mistaken if Edward is not himself aware that there would be many difficulties in his way, if he were to wish to marry a woman who had not either a great fortune or high rank. (p. 20-21) The quote represents Elinorââ¬â¢s realization that her marriage to Edward Ferrars, a man from a wealthy family, was in jeopardy solely because of his familyââ¬â¢s arrogance. Since Elinor did not have the social and financial esteem that they wanted, Edwardââ¬â¢s family verifies that status was more important than happiness. To further show that money and social connection was crucial in nineteenth century life, Austen shows the cruel circle in which no money and no connections creates. Primogeniture, or the tradition where first-born child, usually male, inherits estate and wealth, prevents the Dashwood sisters from having money. Narrative vs. Descriptive Writing - 977 Words
A narrative essay uses a point of view to tell a story. It is an engaging way for an author to tell his reader about an experience they have had or a personal story. Descriptive writing is a description of something. It could be a person, place, thing, emotion or experience. The author is allowed more artistic freedom when writing in descriptive form. While both descriptive and narrative essays are similar in many ways, the descriptive essays use of language fully immerses the reader into the story and allows the reader to feel the intended emotion. Descriptive writing is painting a vivid image. When reading I want to be able to lose myself in the writing doesnââ¬â¢t everyone? Both narrative and descriptive writing includeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is very important for a narrative essay to follow a sequence of events. In the narrative essay This Old House, the author followed a clear chronological order. Sedaris told a story that included all of the typical compon ents such as an introduction, and worked its way through all of the events, introducing you to the characters and setting the stage along the way. Our book explains ââ¬Å"As you learned earlier, plot is the order, or sequence, of events that unfold in your story. It is crucial that you organize these events so that, by the end of the story, they make sense to the reader and build up to a crucial moment in the narrative. (Connell Sole, 2013). Sedaris did an excellent job of guiding the reader through the story. In contrast, descriptive writing does not necessarily follow a timeline or story pattern. Descriptive style must use another form of organization. A descriptive essay may for example separate paragraphs by the particular details being described. The author may devote an entire paragraph to a sense, emotion or object. Amy Tan devoted one paragraph to describe her angst and dismay ââ¬Å"When I found out that my parents had invited the ministers family over for Christma s Eve dinner, I cried. Iron And Silk (619 words) Essay Example For Students
Iron And Silk (619 words) Essay Iron And SilkSalzman, M., (1986). Iron and Silk. New York: Random House. This book was given to me by a goodfriend who knew that I had an interest in Asia. I chose to read it because it was a true story and was told that itwas a good read. The author travels to China as an English teacher for the Hunan Medical School. There he stayed for twoyears picking up many anecdotes along the way. The author already had spent a large amount of his life studyingChinese language and the martial arts. However, when he arrives in China he meets teachers who have dedicatedtheir entire lives to perfecting a particular art or skill, whether it be martial arts or calligraphy. Mark Salzman was perfecting his calligraphy skills and as weeks had passed he began to make progress. He was getting tired of the models and wanted to try something new. When he told Hai Bin,(his teacher), hefrowned and said,?Some people spend their entire lives researching a single model. You should be willing tospend a year on this one.? This is an example of the dedication and perseverance these men have towards theirchosen artform or skill. Another example of this theme, was Marks Wushu teacher, Pan, who punched a fiftypound plate of steel up to ten thousand tim es a day. Marks relentless practicing of the many forms of Wushu wasinfluenced by Pan. Salzman also showed that there was great oppression. The people of China were under constantsurveillance and control. Rarely were they able to make important decisions for themselves. It was sad to see thatin a country with so many people there was so little freedom. The government controlled everything from therailroad to the Rat Collection Office to whether families and friends could mourn for lost loved-ones. Mark foundthis way of life troublesome yet he had stay strong and focused for his calligraphy and martial arts. Mark Salzmans Iron and Silk did a wonderful job of illustrating the people of China. He brought to life acorner of the world that we would rarely be able to see, outside of picture books. His representation is a verypersonal one, taking you beyond the scenery and into the action and heartache. Throughout this book, Salzmanexpertly reveals the personality and spirit of the Chinese people. He does this with his own type of specialimagery. He drops in enough key details and leaves the rest to your imagination. This caused me to pay closeattention to what was going on. His style of writing makes you feel like you are right there beside him, participating in each of his many escapades. I was influenced by the dedication his teachers had for their chosenartform and will remind myself to use that dedication and perseverance in my long-term goals. Mark Salzmans purpose was to take you to China and introduce you to the people he had met on hisjourney. He had published this book only two years after he had gone to China. He desperately wanted to share anoutsiders look into China and what influences were in his life. Mark wrote so fluidly that it was person to person. Anyone can pick up this book and be an observer in the memories of the author. I found that my reading skills vary like a roller coaster. I had days when I found my reading to be verychoppy and I had to remind myself to see the words in the book as speech and not words in a book,(if that makesany sense). My vocabulary was up to par and the book was an easy read. I began to use my speed readingtechniques without discomfort near the last few chapters in the book. Book Reports

What is the self free essay sample
When people are born, they have set blue prints that give them: their initial self. A moms of their ancestors DNA. Babies are given a name and a physical appearance. It is like making blue prints for a house, and you do not know where it will be built, or what kind of people will be living in it. This is where memories, experiences and the people we meet change those blue prints into a human with a personality that is built on throughout life. I think that the self exists in the brain. The brain is an amazing and complex organ that we know very little about. Live that there is a little section in between the memories and our problem solving where our self exists. After our initial identity is created, believe it changes weekly. Every significant interaction affects us, starting out with parents. Some of us are exactly like our parents and other are the complete opposite, but there is no doubt no matter what situation, they have an immense effect on us. We will write a custom essay sample on What is the self or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I am exactly like my dad. We think the same things are funny, and we both react to conflict in the same way. On the other hand, I am the exact opposite from my mom.I am not saying one is better, but they both have created the person am probably until 7th grade. After that became the ominous teen years where my identity was not changed but built on yet again, this time by my friends. Started caring about how looked, and how people thought about me because that is what my friends did. I became more outgoing and funny, and I enjoyed adventure. I think that the more people we create bonds with, the larger our personalities get. By that mean that we have many different personalities when we start going to school we CT a different way with teachers, parents, friends, and boyfriends.High school turns us into robots. By junior year weve all had enough, and we have enough general knowledge to begin what we want to do with our lives. High school in my eyes puts us in boxes where we all come out the same. We are forced to take all the same classes in order to graduate or get higher education. Nothing depends on our interests, or what we are good at. We would be much different people if we learned about things we were interested in, and it would allow us to grow into our selves more before we re off to college. This causes students to become crazy, grade-obsessed students who dont care about the material, because there is no interest! All successful students are like this, and its not who we really are. Think that its horrible to build our foundation on this. All throughout grade school, the self is manipulated pulled and twisted until we arent sure who we are anymore. Then the opportunity of college comes at the perfect time. We are ripped away from all of our prior relationships. So what does that do to the self? Hint this is the best opportunity for the self to do a personality cleanse. We take who we are from all of our different connections jumble it all together, keeping the good traits and getting rid of the bad. Was very fortunate to experience this early, towards the beginning of high school, with going to camp. That had the same effect on me that I presume college to be like, the idea of being thrown into a new environment and knowing no one. It matured me, but it made my self become solidified and really made me a whole person. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind was very thought provoking. It made me think, if my memories of an important person in my life were wiped would be the same. All my connections that I have had with people, I like to think, have affected me in a good way and built upon my personality. I dont even think that would be able to erase all the memories, because people have had such a profound impact on me, that if I saw them I would feel those emotions all over again. The article Seeing the Light, really made me question my believes in the afterlife. Am certain that dont believe in God, but I do think that we have an unphysical being. But where does that being go? Id like to believe in something that continues on after death, but I just cant wrap my mind around that idea. I think the self is attached to the brain, and when the body dies the mind goes with it. Seeing the light is the releasing of chemicals in the brain to make the self feel happy and safe during a scary moment. This could last for minutes after death until all parts of the body are completely shut down and not coming back. After thinking about a higher power, and how that relates to our selves I feel very liberated not believing n anything.

Common Cores of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort Essay Example
Common Cores of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort Essay In the Harry Potter series, by J. K. Rowling, there is a connection in the wandsââ¬â¢ of Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter. This connection causes Harry and Lord Voldemort to have a hard time defeating one another because both of the wands have a feather of the same phoenix. Lord Voldemort wanted to kill Harry so he could have another horcrux to store his soul in. The reason the wands react strangely when fighting against one another is because when they do, the wands display all of the spells which the wizard has cast in reverse order of the casting. The winning wizard often gains powers from the losing wizard because of the connection. This connection is Priori Incantatem, which causes Harry to be able to have more power in his wand because when he dueled in the cemetery with Lord Voldemort in The Goblet of Fire, he absorbed some of Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s power which made Harry capable of conjuring spells which his was unaware that he was able to do. (Goblet) He ends up having much stronger powers then anyone had imagined for such a young wizard. This makes him a role model to other students at Hogwarts, and causes them to want to join forces with him to form Dumbledoreââ¬â¢s Army in The Order of the Phoenix. (Order) In the Wizarding world, each magic wand is made from wood and has a magical core. Mr. Ollivander is a wand maker in Diagon Alley and the wands he makes have one of three cores: dragon heartstring, unicorn tail hair, or phoenix feather. Harry and Lord Voldemort both have wands that share the same core from the same source. When a wizard goes to get a wand they donââ¬â¢t choose the wand it chooses them. When Harry goes to get his wand, he goes through many to get to the one that is meant for him. The wand that is meant for him is a combination of phoenix feather and holly, which is not often seen in the wizarding world. Mr. Ollivander said, ââ¬ËI remember every wand Iââ¬â¢ve sold Mr. Potter. It so happens that the phoenix, whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another featherââ¬âjust one other. It is very curious indeed that you should be destined for this wand, when its brotherââ¬âwhy, its brother gave you that scar. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦After all, He-Who-Must- Not- Be- Named, did great thingsââ¬âterrible, yes, but great. (Rowling, Sorcererââ¬â¢s 85). Harry did not know all this at the time of receiving his wand but the connection had gone back to when Lord Voldemort tried to kill him. Hagrid told Harry that the mark that was given o him was by the same man that killed his parents and the only way to get a mark like that is to be ââ¬Å"touched by a curse and evil curse at thatâ⬠. (Sorcererââ¬â¢s) There was a prophecy that told Lord Voldemort that: The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power t he Dark Lord knows not and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives he one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies (The Prophecy) The prophecy is important to the action of the next film because Harry realizes that he must kill Lord Voldemort in order to live his life. He begins seeking out the horcruxsââ¬â¢ which Lord Voldemort has set up to keep him from truly dying. The prophecy also states that Harry has a hidden power which the ââ¬Å"Dark Lordâ⬠will not know about, which helps Harry defeat Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s ultimate downfall comes from his own hubris and arrogance. He believes that Harry Potter is just a boy and could never defeat him. He causes his own defeat by allowing himself to believe that he could never be defeated. Lord Voldemort inadvertently turned Harry into a horcrux when Lord Voldemort killed Harryââ¬â¢s parents. Then turned the wand on Harry, but because Harry was protected, it caused Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s body to be destroyed and leaving nothing but a soul. Part of Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s soul was able to go into Harryââ¬â¢s scar. This kept them connected and which is why when Harry goes to get his wand, the wand that is chosen is connected to Lord Voldemort. From the beginning Lord Voldemort has tried to kill Harry and it has not worked: Harry had been a year old the night that Voldemort ââ¬âthe most powerful dark wizard for a century, a wizard who had been gaining power steadily for eleven years ââ¬âarrived at his house and killed his father and mother. Voldemort had then turned his wand on Harry; he had performed the curse which disposed of many full-grown witches and wizards in his steady rise to power ââ¬âand, incredibly, it had not worked. Instead, of killing the small boy, the curse had rebounded upon Voldemort. Harry had survived with nothing but a lightning-shaped cut on his forehead, and Voldemort had been reduced to something barely alive. His powers gone, his life almost extinguished, Voldemort had fled; the terror in which the secret community of witches and wizards had lived for so long had lifted, Voldemortââ¬â¢s followers had disbanded, and Harry Potter had become famous. (Rowling, Goblet 20) Lord Voldemort has encountered many difficulties when trying to kill Harry. The first time was due to Harryââ¬â¢s mother, Lily; she sacrificed herself to save her son by imbuing him with a charm that prevented Lord Voldemort from harming him. The protective charm bestowed on Harry by his mothers sacrifice importantly, a sacrifice she chose to make but need not have made afforded him a lingering protection against direct attacks by Voldemort. This charm was kept active as long as he had a home among Lilys blood relatives and only until he came of age seventeenâ⬠. (Lord) Lord Voldemo rt wasnââ¬â¢t around for a while after that but when he did come back, he came after Harry again. It was the common cores of the wands that caused him problems. The common cores of their wands have a lot to do with why they cannot fight each other and ever have one, truly win. This is due to the prophecy that states: The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approachesâ⬠¦Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month diesâ⬠¦ and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows notâ⬠¦ and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survivesâ⬠¦ The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month diesâ⬠¦ (Rowling, Order 841) Harry and Lord Voldemort are connected because of what he did to Harry when he was a year old. Harry feels when Lord Voldemort is around, through the pain in his scar. In The Order of the Phoenix, Harry learns that he has link, which allows Lord Voldemort to control Harryââ¬â¢s thoughts and read his mind, as well as appear in his dreams. Harry is able to see what Lord Voldemort is doing as well and has several dreams which allowed him to know what Lord Voldemort was doing and who he was with. This concerned his mentor Professor Dumbledore, but he did not understand the extent of the connection. He sent Harry to work with Professor Snape, so that Harry would be able to protect his mind from Lord Voldemort through occulamency, which is the ability to protect ones mind from a psychic attack. The connection they share grows as time goes on and intensifies after a meeting in the cemetery in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, where Peter Petegrew uses Harryââ¬â¢s blood to reanimate Lord Voldemort in semi-human form. He then is able to touch Harry without feeling pain and is able to hurt Harry. This makes things interesting for Harry because he is still not as skilled of a wizard as Lord Voldemort. The wands which Harry and Lord Voldemort have, are connected but very different because Harry uses his wand for good, where Lord Voldemort uses his wand for evil. The connection which Harryââ¬â¢s wand has with Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s wand, makes it more complicated for them to duel because of the twin cores, and the fact that the feathers are from the same phoenix. Lord Voldemort does not understand why he cannot hurt nor kill Harry. He tries some really horrible spells and they just back fire on him. Like in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire during the World cup when Harry and Cedric get to the Twiwizard Cup together and touch it, they are brought to the cemetery, because the Triwizard cup was turned into a portkey: They had left Hogwarts grounds completely; they had obviously traveled milesââ¬âperhaps hundreds of milesââ¬âfor even the mountains surrounding the castle were gone. They were standing instead in a dark and overgrown graveyard; the black outline of a small church was visible Cedric looked at the Triwizard Cup and then up at Harry. ââ¬Å"Did anyone tell you the cup was a Portkey? he asked. ââ¬Å"Nope,â⬠said Harryâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Is this supposed to be part of the task? â⬠(Goblet 236-37) Harry and Cedric had no idea where they had gone to. Something was not right they were not where they were supposed to be. Lord Voldemort had pulled them there. Harry didnââ¬â¢t know until he felt pain: And then without warning, Harryââ¬â¢s scar exploded with pain. It was agony such as he had never felt in all his life; his wand slipped from his fingers as he put his hands over his face; his knees buckled; he was on the ground and he could see nothing at all; his head was about to split open. (Goblet 237-38) The pain in Harryââ¬â¢s head, happened every time he was close to Lord Voldemort and he knew something bad was going to happen. He was connected to Lord Voldemort not only by the wands but by the Horcux. The term ââ¬Å"Horcruxâ⬠is used to refer to any object in which a person has concealed a part of his or her soul. (Horcruxes) Lord Voldemort had unintentionally put in Harryââ¬â¢s lightning shaped scar when he tried to kill Harry the first time when he was a child. This is why Lord Voldemort cannot kill Harry and every time Voldemort is near, Harry can feel him. Harry lay flat on his back, breathing hard as though he had been running. He had awoken from a vivid dream with his hands pressed over his face. The old scar on his forehead, which was shaped like a bolt of lightning, was burning beneath his fingers as though someone had just pressed a white-hot wire to his skin Harry tried to recall what he had been dreaming about before he had awoken. It had seemed so realâ⬠¦ There had been two people he knew and one he didnââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦ He concentrated hard, frowning, trying to rememberâ⬠¦ (16-17). Harry dreamed of Lord Voldemort and what he was doing. It was actually like he was there while it was happening because of the occlamency. The pain in his scar meant Lord Voldemort was close. Lord Voldemort was plotting and doing evil, and Harry was able to observe his plotting in his dream. He was unable to decipher what the dreams meant until Professor Dumbledore was aware of the connection Lord Voldemort and Harry had. Harry obtains power of the Elder wand after defeating Draco Malfoy in battle. This also changes the course of the story in the Novels. Lord Voldemort had obtained the Elder wand, which belonged to Harry because of Draco Malfoyââ¬Ës defeat, but because Lord Voldemort was not the rightful owner of the Elder wand, he could not kill Harry while using it. What allowed Harry to defeat Lord Voldemort was his humanity. Lord Voldemort was arrogant and is what lead to his downfall. Lord Voldemort had created the enemy which would defeat him, which was himself. The connection between Harry and Lord Voldemort is very important throughout the Harry Potter series. Every time Lord Voldemort and Harry battled with the twin core wands, Harry got more powerful. Lord Voldemort had the protection from Harryââ¬â¢s mother, as long as Lord Voldemort was still alive, Harry could not be defeated. Lord Voldemort has been compared to Hitler in the way he treats people and how badly he wants to be immortal: According to a CIA analysis of Hitler, he came from ââ¬Å"illiterate peasant stock derived from a mixture of races. His father was illegitimate. . . Hitlerââ¬â¢s mother was a domestic servant. It is said that his fatherââ¬â¢s father was a Jew and it is certain that his godfather was a Jew. â⬠Other similarities Hitler had in common with Voldemort included megalomaniacal tendencies and ââ¬Å"a fixed determination to repress [feelings of weakness, timidity], and to condemn them in others. Hitler, too, insisted on always being right, with enormous discrimination towards others and an appetite for power. As a tyrannical leader who behaved without conscience and who authorised followers to do the same, Hitler, like Voldemort, could be regarded as having a psychopathic personality. Both were known for their connections with the conservative, titled, ruling class (and t heir money); in Hitlerââ¬â¢s case, this included disgruntled Freikorps officers who felt that Germany had had a raw deal from the Versailles Treaty which concluded World War One. Werewolf) Lord Voldemort being compared to Hitler is pretty hilarious and has a lot of good points. He wants immortality and to rule over everyone, he expects people to listen to him and treat him like a king. There is a warped sense of reality when it comes to the prophecy and what he has to do. This causes a collapse of events that become his demise. Lord Voldemort wants to kill Harry to save himself and to become stronger, and in the process defeats himself. Harry becomes a stronger wizard every time he fights Lord Voldemort. He is able to take in some of Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s power because of the twin wand cores. Harry grows a need to fight Lord Voldemort and protect the family he has and his school, because of Lord Voldemortââ¬â¢s attacks. Dumbledore is there to guide him through the process of figuring out how to defeat Lord Voldemort most of the way. Although the wand cores donââ¬â¢t have any part in the final battle, they help Harry to gain the strength he needs to defeat Lord Voldemort, along with the Love for his friends which Lord Voldemort could never conceive of.
